Pride PX4 Heavy-Duty Mobility Scooter
The Pride PX4 is one of the largest and most capable mobility scooters in Pride's lineup. If someone comes to us looking for a scooter primarily for outdoor use, longer distances, comfort and stability, this is the type of scooter we would be looking at.
With a 500 lb weight capacity, speeds of approximately 9.2 mph, full suspension, large pneumatic tires and a rated range of up to 23.4 miles, the PX4 is built very differently from a traditional travel scooter.
In our opinion, this is much closer to a true outdoor mobility vehicle than something designed to be taken apart and put in the trunk after every trip.
 
Our Thoughts on the Pride PX4
 
The first thing we like about the PX4 is the ride.
Pride combines full suspension, 13-inch pneumatic tires and a memory-foam high-back seat, which makes a lot of sense for someone who expects to spend significant time outdoors.
With smaller travel scooters, cracked sidewalks, transitions and rough pavement can get uncomfortable fairly quickly. A scooter like the PX4 gives you much more tire, suspension and seating between you and the ground.
For the right client, that difference can be substantial.
We also like the seating options. Rather than treating the seat as an afterthought, Pride offers different seat widths and adjustable seat depths. For a larger scooter — particularly one with a 500 lb capacity — we think proper seating space is extremely important.
 
Where We Think the PX4 Does Best
 
This is a scooter we would primarily consider for someone using their mobility scooter as a major part of their everyday mobility.
Neighbourhood driving, longer sidewalk trips, paved trails, parks, outdoor events, retirement communities and larger shopping environments are much more in the PX4's wheelhouse than tight indoor maneuvering.
Its maximum speed of approximately 9.2 mph also makes it much better suited to covering meaningful distances than a compact scooter limited to around 4 mph.
And with Pride rating the PX4 for up to 23.4 miles per charge, it gives someone considerably more freedom for longer outings.
Actual range will always vary with user weight, hills, terrain, tire pressure, temperature, battery condition and driving style.
 
What We Like Most
 
For us, the biggest strength of the PX4 is that Pride didn't simply take a regular scooter and increase the weight capacity.
The entire scooter feels designed around heavier-duty outdoor use.
You get full suspension, pneumatic tires, a 500 lb capacity, a substantial seating system, large 75Ah batteries and a supplemental hand brake.
It also has some features you don't normally see on basic mobility scooters.
The PX4 uses an NFC key fob ignition system. Instead of a traditional scooter key, the user taps the paired fob near the receiver to activate the scooter. We like that particularly for someone who stores their scooter in a shared or accessible environment because it adds another layer of security.
There is also a water-resistant user interface, LCD console and full LED lighting package.
Things We Would Consider Before Buying
The PX4 is a big scooter — and that's both its strength and its limitation.
It is approximately 55.9 inches long and 27.83 inches wide, with an 82.28-inch turning radius.
That is a lot of scooter.
If you're expecting to maneuver through a small apartment, tight hallways or crowded indoor spaces every day, we would seriously consider whether you actually need a scooter this large.
The other major consideration is transportation.
The PX4 weighs approximately 299 lb with its standard batteries before adding the standard seat, and approximately 351 lb with the standard seat and batteries.
This is not something we would describe as a conventional portable scooter.
If you need to regularly transport it by vehicle, we would start talking about an appropriate mobility-device lift, carrier, accessible van or other transportation solution rather than planning to disassemble and lift it into a trunk.
That is an important distinction.
If easy vehicle transportation is your main priority, we would almost certainly recommend looking at a different scooter.
 
Pneumatic Tires: Why We Like Them — and What to Know
 
The PX4 uses large 13-inch pneumatic tires.
For outdoor driving, we like pneumatic tires because they generally provide a softer and more forgiving ride over imperfect surfaces than small solid tires.
Combined with the PX4's suspension, they are one of the reasons this scooter should feel considerably more comfortable over outdoor terrain.
The trade-off is maintenance.
Pneumatic tires need to maintain proper air pressure and, unlike solid tires, can potentially develop leaks or punctures.
For someone who wants essentially zero tire maintenance, that's something we'd discuss before purchase.
For someone prioritizing ride quality, however, we think the pneumatic setup makes sense on a scooter like this.
 
Seating & Comfort
 
The PX4 is equipped with a reclining high-back memory-foam seat and seat slider.
Pride offers several seating configurations, including approximately 18", 20" and 22" width options, depending on configuration.
We like having those options because the correct mobility scooter isn't determined by weight capacity alone.
Seat width, seat depth, foot position, armrest clearance, transfers and overall posture all matter.
A 500 lb capacity doesn't automatically mean the scooter is appropriately fitted to every person under 500 lb.
That's one of the reasons we prefer clients actually sit in and drive a scooter like the PX4 before deciding.
 
Is the Pride PX4 Worth It?
 
If someone needs a serious outdoor scooter, we think the PX4 deserves a very close look.
The combination of a 500 lb weight capacity, full suspension, pneumatic tires, large batteries, high-back seating and higher driving speed makes it considerably more substantial than most everyday mobility scooters.
But we would not recommend buying it simply because bigger sounds better.
If most of your use is indoors, you're frequently transporting your scooter in a regular vehicle, or you don't need this level of outdoor performance, a smaller scooter may actually be the better choice.
If you're looking for comfort, outdoor capability, higher capacity and longer-distance mobility, though, this is exactly the type of scooter we'd want you to compare.
