The Pride Maxima is a heavy-duty mobility scooter designed for users who need more weight capacity, seating space and overall support than a conventional mobility scooter can provide.
With a 500 lb weight capacity, a 22-inch wide high-back seat and your choice of a 3-wheel or 4-wheel configuration, the Maxima is one of Pride's most substantial everyday mobility scooters.
In our opinion, this is a scooter we would look at when proper fit and higher capacity are more important than portability.
 
Our Thoughts on the Pride Maxima
What stands out to us most is that the Maxima is built around the needs of a larger user rather than simply putting a higher weight rating on a standard scooter.
The standard seat is approximately 22 inches wide with adjustable depth from 18 to 20 inches. That extra seating space can make a significant difference for someone who feels restricted in a conventional 17- or 18-inch scooter seat.
The 500 lb capacity also puts the Maxima into a different category from most of Pride's standard mobility scooters.
For the right user, we think proper seating space and a substantial platform are the real reasons to consider this model.
 
Who We Think It Is Best For
We think the Maxima is best suited for someone who needs a higher weight capacity, wider seating or simply prefers the feel of a larger and more substantial scooter.
It works well for shopping, retirement communities, appointments, paved outdoor use and general everyday mobility.
This is not the scooter we would choose for someone whose number-one priority is lifting a scooter into the back of a car.
The Maxima is designed around capacity, comfort and durability rather than being lightweight.
 
3-Wheel or 4-Wheel?
The Maxima is available in both 3-wheel and 4-wheel configurations.
The 3-wheel version has an approximately 49-inch turning radius, making it easier to maneuver in tighter indoor environments.
The 4-wheel Maxima has an approximately 53-inch turning radius and gives you the wider front footprint that many users prefer.
Neither configuration is automatically better.
If maneuverability is the priority, we would seriously consider the 3-wheel model. If you prefer the feel of four wheels, we would look at the 4-wheel version.
Whenever possible, we recommend trying both before deciding.
 
What We Like Most
The seating and capacity are the biggest strengths for us.
A 22-inch wide seat is significantly larger than what you will find on most standard mobility scooters, and the adjustable seat depth allows the seating position to be better matched to the user.
The Maxima also uses flat-free solid tires, which means there is no need to maintain tire pressure or worry about punctures.
You also get a delta-style tiller and a large, straightforward scooter platform without unnecessary complexity.
 
Optional Power Elevating Seat
One particularly interesting option on the Maxima is Pride's power elevating seat.
Depending on configuration, this allows the user to raise the seating position electrically.
For some users, that can be helpful for reaching higher surfaces, interacting with others at a different height or improving access during certain everyday activities.
We would consider the power seat based on the individual's needs rather than automatically adding it to every Maxima.
 
Range & Everyday Use
Pride Canada rates the Maxima for speeds of up to approximately 9.3 km/h.
The 3-wheel model is rated for up to approximately 31.8 km per charge, while the 4-wheel version is rated for up to approximately 31.3 km.
That gives the Maxima plenty of range for most everyday outings.
Actual driving range will vary depending on user weight, terrain, hills, battery condition, temperature and driving habits.
 
Things We Would Consider Before Buying
The Maxima does not have suspension.
That is important to understand when comparing it with some of Pride's outdoor-focused scooters.
The large platform and seating make it substantial, but someone who regularly travels over rough pavement and prioritizes suspension may be better served by a different model.
We would also plan transportation carefully.
The Maxima is a heavy-duty scooter, not a conventional travel scooter. If it needs to be transported regularly, we would normally discuss an appropriate vehicle lift, carrier or accessible vehicle rather than expecting someone to lift it into a trunk.
 
Is the Pride Maxima Worth It?
For someone who genuinely needs the extra capacity and seating space, we think the Maxima fills an important role in Pride's scooter lineup.
The 500 lb capacity, 22-inch seating and choice between three or four wheels make it much more accommodating than a typical mobility scooter.
If you do not need the additional capacity or seating room, a smaller scooter may be easier to maneuver and transport.
But for someone who needs a heavy-duty scooter with substantially more room, the Maxima is absolutely one we would recommend considering.
